FBMK Dresser Makeover
I probably spend the same amount of time on Facebook Marketplace as on Instagram. And honestly, if you’re not on it and love a find then I’m shaking my head at you! If you’re wondering where to start, search, search, and save! It has an algorithm so once you start searching for things “vintage” “antique” “bamboo” etc. and saving things you like it will begin showing you better and better stuff. I was looking for an antique dresser to makeover as the changing table in the nursery for maybe a month, a few fell through and then one random Friday night FB served me up one not too far from me for $80. I confirmed the dimensions with her and picked it up the next day! You are going to come across unresponsive people, even sometimes a little rude. Still, I try to be super enthusiastic when asking questions about a nice piece to let the seller know I am genuinely interested and appreciate what they are selling. Another tip, look at how long it has been listed, if it’s been a while, make an offer the worst they can say is no. Lastly, before I move on to this makeover - prepare yourself for disappointment. There have been so many times I come across a gem and am soo giddy only for them to say sorry it just sold or answer all my questions and feels like it’s going to be a win for them to say sorry it sold or ghost you and you go back to follow up and see in tlhe chat the item has now sold. FBMK can be the best but also break your heart haha.
Okay, this dresser. Once we began work on it we realized the black paint was actually lacquer spray paint and was sanding/peeling off in these big pieces, it was a messsss! And then under the black was another coat of paint. We did a mixture of automatic sanding, hand sanding, and using a paint stripper in the small crevasses. Here comes the funny part of this makeover. We purchased a paint gun thinking “We are going to take our DIY skills to the next level!!” Fast forward a bit, we are renovating our hallway bathroom and the guys are using a fancy ass paint gun I say “ooo I got this paint gun to paint that dresser over there!!” and he was like “Yeah…that paint gun is hard to use….”. This promptly led me to call the contractor and say “any chance your team could use your fancy paint gun to paint a piece of furniture we’ve already sanded?!”. He agreed, gave me a price and a few days later Victor begins to work on it and says to me “y’all did a lot of work on this but I’m going to re-sand there are a lot of uneven parts!” LOL. I am so thankful I asked them because now it looks good not ‘we did it but it may not last too long’.
Let me know if there are any questions about this or FBMK! Oh, and the paint color Farrow & Ball Parma Grey.
